Plumbing emergencies happen to most people at some point or other. Don’t panic if a pipe breaks or you discover a leak: plumbing emergencies are relatively easy for professionals to handle. Follow these steps and your plumbing crisis will be nothing more than a distant memory in no time.
Shut Off the Water If your toilet is overflowing and shows no sign of stopping, open up the toilet tank and push the stopper into the drain. That should stop the flow of water—if it doesn’t, shut off your water valve.
The first thing to do if a pipe breaks or you find a leak is to shut off the main water source. For most homes, this is located near the street, under an access hatch. You might need a pipe wrench to operate the valve that shuts the water off. Some homes have shut off valves where the water supply enters your house. If you cannot find your shut off valve, now is a good time to contact your local water company or plumber for guidance.
Clean Up As soon as you shut the water off, be sure to turn on all of the household’s faucets in order to drain the water system. After that, a mop and bucket should be sufficient in cleaning up any spills or leaks. Be sure to clean up the water as soon as possible, as it can cause damage to your home if it sits too long.
Contact a Plumber As soon as you shut off the water, contact a plumber to fix the root cause of the emergency. Whatever the reason and location of the leak, the plumber should be able to handle your problem and have you back into your normal routine in no time.

If you don’t seem to be getting enough—or any—hot water, the first thing a plumber will tell you is that it might be time to replace your current water heater. Consider the following tips for selecting a water heater that will work best for your needs and your home:
Gas Storage If you currently have a gas storage water heater and it needs to be replaced, this is a good option. By paying a little bit more upfront, you’ll be able to save roughly 7% on your water heating bills. Fortunately, a plumber will not need to perform anything more than simple installation and maintenance.
Tankless Gas Heater A tankless gas heater is probably your best bet if you’re always running out of hot water or you have limited space for a hot water heater. This water heater will last much longer than a typical hot water heater, and it will save you around 30% on your water heating bill! Here’s the catch: it costs more upfront and requires that you to have a natural gas line in your home that’s at least ¾” wide. A plumber will probably need to maintain these types of water heaters more than the average water heater.
Electric Heat Pump If you don’t have the right configuration for a gas water heater, you can still cut your water heating bills in half with an electric heat pump. However, you will need to spend more upfront and you will need to have some space for a plumber to install a condensate drain. Depending on your current water usage, the savings may be well worth the cost.
